Have you heard of Amazon's new Kindle, state of the art electronic reading device? For those of you who haven't, I thought I'd give you my husband's review of it, as he received one the second week of February.

Amazon’s new Kindle is an electronic book that stores hundreds of books in its memory and can be held just as easily as a paperback book. Within a week I downloaded about 20 current books, the Bible, several free classic books (all of Jane Austen’s)  at minibooks.net, and receive a daily recap of news from the Washington Post. For those of you who are curious about it, I’ve included some pros and cons for you:
Pros:
1. You don’t have to carry around a stack of books that you are reading, or find a place on your bookshelves to store all the ones you’ve.
2.  When you see a book you want, it is downloaded literally within seconds. (It uses an internet-like connection.)
3.  It is very easy to read. The technology they used makes it appear as if it is words on paper; there is no backlighting like on a computer screen.
4.  When your eyes grow tired, you can adjust the size of the font to one of 6 font sizes.
5.  Amazon keeps a back up of all the books you’ve purchased in case of a problem.
6.  You can back up all your books to your computer with a USB cable. (However, at this point you can’t read them from your computer.)
7.  The Kindle has a flash card slot so you can expand its memory (1 to 4 gigabytes is available).
8.  You can download the first few chapters of a book to see if it’s something you would like to purchase.
Cons:
1.  Not every book is available on Kindle, but the number is growing daily.
2.  It is only available in the U.S. because of the special internet connection, you have to be in the U.S. to receive the downloads. My husband says, however, that since you can download the books to your computer and then to your Kindle, if you are outside the U.S. you could still use it. You would just have to do that one extra step.
3.  You basically need one for each person in the household. If you only have one, it can only be used by one person at a time, so if you both want to read at the same time, that won’t work.
4.  The Kindle books are “proprietary” to your particular Kindle. You can’t share them with friends, transferring from one Kindle to another. As stated in #6 at the left, you can upload them to your computer, but you can’t read them there or download them to someone else’s Kindle.
Finally, and this can be a pro or con, depending on how you look at it. Kindle’s price is fairly high - $399.00. But in the week since my husband got his, he has saved about $100 on the books he has purchased because the Kindle books are cheaper, especially brand new best sellers. So eventually, you’ll make up the difference if you normally buy a lot of books.
